Steen Announces New Aircraft:
The SPORT-PILOT SKYBOLT!
Palm Bay, FL (April 1, 2005): Steen Aero Lab is proud to announce the newest addition to their line of sport aerobatic aircraft: the Skybolt Bravo-Sport (or Skybolt BS for short.) This new two-place design is designed to meet the demand for a Light-Sport version of the venerable and beloved Steen Skybolt. Major changes have been made to the design to bring it within the Light-Sport certification criteria, including:

  • Replacement of the metal fuselage and tail framework with advanced cellulose composite trusses bonded with space-age epoxy polymer adhesive. This revolutionary process is sometimes known by the trade name of “wood and glue”.
  • Simplified lines… no more dificult bending of flight-surface outlines.
  • Lower-powered engine, to reduce fuel costs.
  • Redesigned landing gear to eliminate bungees.
  • Elimination of the lower wings, to speed construction and improve downward visibility. This enhances visibility to help new, low-time Sport Pilots avoid embarassing hard landings, ground loops, and impacts with livestock on the runway.
  • Revised cabane structure.
  • Inexpensive brace cables have replaced the flying wires. They are also handy for drying underwear at Fly-Ins.
  • Simple, two-point harness system augmented by a patented “airframe retention system” so that front-seat passengers cannot easily physically leave the aircraft.
  • Homeland Security System: Front-seat passengers and cargo are difficult to load quickly, such as would be necessary when trying to escape from federal agents. The payload capacity and range has been reduced as well, to further reduce the aircraft’s value to any would-be terrorists.
  • Air conditioning: A must for Florida’s hot climate, the Skybolt BS has been equipped with the latest in free-airstream climate control systems.
  • Navigation: We provide a revolutionary “Polymer Fiber Hook & Loop Removable Communications Attachment System” ®TM (Patent Pending) so that the pilot may easily attach the radio of their choice to the aircraft.

The Skybolt BS prototype is already flying, and even has a smoke system installed. So far, all flight tests have gone well, with the plane proven to fly well up to Vne (115mph) and with maneuvers up to +1.8G/-0.9G having been successfully performed. Soon, we plan to test it with the entire IAC Advanced aerobatic sequence. Steen plans to offer kits for the Skybolt BS at Sun ‘N Fun, with plans available for $19.95 and ready-to-cover examples selling for around $1,500, with additional engine and options available. Glider, Tricycle-gear, and seaplane versions will all be available as well.

April Fools!

The ‘Skybolt BS’ is actually Mike Cuy’s beautiful Pietenpol Air Camper NX48MC, 1998 Oshkosh Lindy Award winner. This elegant aircraft features a smoke system (powered by a bug sprayer!) and uses a Continental A-65 for power.
